IBM System z from Mainline

zIIP and zAAP Processor Enablement

The zIIP or zSeries Integrated Information Processor is a special purpose processor available on z9 and z10 servers. Select DB2 Distributed BI, ERP and CRM work, Communication Server IPSec Encryption, XML workloads, and large Hipersocket packets are all possible candidates to have their cycles relocated to zIIP processors.

The zAAP or zSeries Application Assist Processor is a special purpose processor available on z9, z10, z890 and z990 servers. Java applications and XML workloads are candidates to have their cycles relocated to zIIP processors.

By offloading eligible processing cycles from the general purpose processors and dispatching them to the special purpose zIIP and zAAP processors, you can lower your overall computing costs for eligible workloads. IBM imposes no software charges zIIP and zAAP processors. Additional IBM software charges apply only to additional general purpose processors. By moving cycles from general purpose processors to the zIIP and zAAP specialty processors, it may be possible to postpone or eliminate future processor upgrades.

Mainline can perform the following:

  • Identify prospective workloads that may be eligible for zIIP processing
  • Identify prospective workloads that may be eligible for zAAP processing
  • Identify, order and apply maintenance to relevant software to allow zIIP and zAAP exploitation
  • Run reports to project approximate general purpose processor cycle offload
  • Run reports to project approximate zIIP and zAPP processor usage
  • Contact ISVs to determine if their product charges will be affected
  • Determine if zIIP and zAAP processors are the right choice for you
